The owners of a Patrington skip hire and waste disposal firm have praised the swift response of Humberside Fire and Rescue after a large blaze at its premises earlier this week.
The fire service was called to HMC Dismantling and Demolition behind Station Road just after 9am on Monday, July 15. The huge plume of thick black smoke could be seen as far away as Cleethorpes. The A1033 through Patrington was closed for a short time as the fire brigade tackled the blaze.
A spokesman for Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “We received a call just after 9am to a building fire in Patrington. Crews were quick to arrive on the scene with the fire well-established. Five engines and specialist equipment were in attendance. They surrounded the fire to stop it from spreading. We advised residents and motorists to keep windows and doors shut. Because of the wind direction, the smoke plumed towards Ottringham and Keyingham.”
The main building was destroyed by the fire, and adjacent brick building gutters and fascias were damaged by the heat. Two nearby vehicles were damaged but not destroyed. A total of 38 firefighters were in attendance to fight the blaze, which was eventually brought under control after a few hours. The cause remains unknown, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
James Hupper, director of HMC Dismantling and Demolition, said: “It went up so quickly – the guys in the shed went to fight it, but something went bang and within minutes the whole shed was ablaze. We were lucky the way the wind went that it didn’t blow into the village.
“The fire brigade was fantastic – I have never seen so many in one place. They did a great job at bringing the fire down quickly. They were there until around 6pm. The Patrington fire brigade was left finishing off.
“We would like to thank all the emergency services that attended, and we would like to thank the fire brigade for their fantastic response and professionalism in an extremely dangerous situation. We are open for business and thank our customers and local businesses for their support.”
HMC Dismantling and Demolition will remain open for skip hire.
