Hornsea Inshore Rescue crew are well trained in saving lives at sea and spend many hours out on the water and on land making sure they’re ready for any scenario.
But it’s not often they have to scramble and come to the rescue of a poorly swan.
Well, on Monday they did just that. A number of people had called in to report a young swan that looked like it was unwell or injured on the beach at Hornsea.
The crew called Ren’s Wildlife Hospital in Keyingham for assistance, and they notified the Yorkshire Swan Rescue Hospital in Selby.
With the rapidly rising tides, a team was not able to get to Hornsea in time to help it before the sea came in.

So for the safety of the swan and the rescue team, the lifeboat volunteers brought the young bird up from the beach themselves to make sure it was safe until specialist help arrived.
Sue Hickson-Marsay from Hornsea Inshore Rescue said: “We brought the swan up to the lifeboat station where the rescue centre collected it.
“We thought at first it had a bad leg, but we then saw it standing up. When the rescue team came, they confirmed they suspected it to have a back injury of some sorts.
“It’s now receiving care and treatment and is in the best possible hands.
“Thank you to everyone for informing us of its need for help.”
