A free concert in aid of non-profit organisation Ruben’s Voice will take place this weekend.
On Saturday, August 16, Draper’s Lane Field in Hedon will host the annual Ruben’s Voice event in memory of teenager Ruben Ferrol, who took his own life at just 18 years old in April 2021.
The day will be a tribute to Ruben, described as a “much-loved” member of his family who had a wide circle of friends. However, Ruben struggled with his mental health and did not seek support.
After his death, his mother Katy Smith set up Ruben’s Voice to raise awareness about mental health and suicide, helping people connect with a range of services, become more active in the community and form friendships.
Entertainment will begin at 12.30pm with a performance from Heatwave Entertainment Majorettes, followed by a speech from the 678th mayor of Hedon, Phil Hinch. The event will feature live music and motivational speakers until 10pm, including She’s Got Soul, Em Taylor, Laura Bolton, ULBC street dance class, Jack Britchford, Jessica Hoe, and more.
There will also be stalls, a bar, food, free face painting, free activities, a free bouncy castle, a free cave pod, and free entry – with everyone welcome.
The event has been made possible through funding from Yorkshire Energy Park and East Riding Council. Fundraising efforts by a youngster named George have also helped the organisation raise £1,300, enabling extra activities such as the cave pod, a surfboard simulator and the bouncy castle.
