Main Street in Preston is set to remain closed after today’s burst water main caused significant damage to the road.
Water supplies across Withernsea and South Holderness should now be back up and running after two burst mains left homes across the area with low or no water for several hours.
However, a road closure and signed diversion remain in place at Main Street as works continue.
Yorkshire Water said its contractor was carrying out the work following the repair to the burst main.
A spokesman said: “A road closure and temporary diversion are currently in place on Main Street, Preston (HU12 8SA), while contract partners, M Group, complete consequential damage to the highway, following a repair to a burst water main earlier today.
“We’re working as quickly as we can to reinstate the highway. For the safety of our colleagues and those living and working in the area, we need to keep the road closed until repairs to the highway are completed.
“We appreciate that this is disruptive and would like to apologise and thank everyone for their patience. The road will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.”
The burst led to a major excavation in Main Street, close to All Saints’ Church, as engineers worked to reach the damaged main beneath the road.
The incident, combined with a second burst and higher-than-usual demand during the warm weather, affected customers in Patrington, Preston, Withernsea, Bilton and surrounding villages.
During the disruption, Yorkshire Water delivered bottled water to customers on its priority services register, with supplies also sent to care homes and other locations across the affected area.
Community efforts were also launched, including Dunedin House in Patrington travelling into Hull to collect bottled water to distribute free of charge to people in the village.
Yorkshire Water has advised that, as the network returns to normal, there may still be some isolated instances of low pressure or discoloured water. Customers experiencing discolouration have been advised to run the tap for a couple of minutes, after which it should return to normal.
