Residents offered chance to send a ‘letter to heaven’

by John Prince

A new postbox that can be used by bereaved families and friends to post private messages for their late loved ones is to be installed in Hornsea.

The white and gold box, which will be called Letters to Heaven, is being put up in Memorial Gardens. The Cameo Bereavement Service, which is behind the plan, received the go-ahead from Hornsea Town Council this week.

The idea, which is similar to one in England’s Hill cemetery in Withernsea (pictured) and Hull’s Chanterlands crematorium, is that anyone can write a letter, a card or a message to someone in their life who they are grieving for.

Messages can be posted at any time, whether that be on a special anniversary or at a particular time of year.

The private messages will be collected, and then blessed in church. They will never be read by anyone else, and will be disposed of by means of composting.

The Cameo Bereavement Service has funded the box, which will be installed and maintained by Hornsea Town Council. It is hoped the postbox will be in place before Christmas.
