Preston road set to reopen after burst water main repairs

Main Street in Preston is expected to reopen on Saturday after repairs to damage caused by last weekend’s major burst water main were completed.

Yorkshire Water said on Friday that work to repair the consequential damage to the highway had been finished and the road would be left to cure overnight.

The road is now partially open either side of the closed section for residential and business access.

Traffic management and the diversion are expected to be removed sometime on Saturday, August 15, although on Friday afternoon the company said it could not yet give an exact time.

The road has remained closed since the major burst on Sunday, August 9, which caused significant damage to the surface near All Saints’ Church and contributed to widespread disruption to water supplies across South Holderness.

Homes and businesses in Preston, Patrington, Withernsea, Bilton and surrounding villages were left with low or no water for much of the day as Yorkshire Water worked to repair two burst mains.

Yorkshire Water has also said that bottled water was delivered to more than 1,400 customers on its Priority Services Register (PSR) during the incident, with what it described as a 98 per cent successful delivery rate.

The company said a small number of people refused deliveries, while there were also a few addresses it was unable to recognise.

The update follows concerns raised by some residents during the outage about the availability of emergency supplies, particularly for people who may need additional support.

Yorkshire Water said it wanted to ensure that anyone who should be receiving priority assistance was registered and asked for details of customers who believed they had been missed during the incident.

The company’s Priority Services Register is free and is available to Yorkshire Water customers who may need additional help, including people with sight or hearing problems, disabilities or mobility concerns, those receiving home dialysis and new parents. Customers can also register if they need extra support for another reason.

Yorkshire Water says that if the water supply is likely to be off for more than five hours, it will try to make water available by other means, which may include delivering bottled water to customers’ homes.

Anyone who is a Yorkshire Water customer can sign up to the PSR at yorkshirewater.com/bill-account/priority-services-register, while a family member, friend or neighbour can also register someone on their behalf. Registration can be completed online or by calling 0800 1 38 78 78.
