Plans to demolish bus garage go live on portal

by Rebecca Hannant

Plans to demolish the East Yorkshire bus garage in Withernsea have gone live on the East Riding Planning Portal.

East Yorkshire Buses said some weeks ago that it would be applying to bulldoze the depot in Bannister Street after a fatal fire at a neighbouring property caused damage to its premises in March 2023.

At the time, concerns were raised about the potential impact on jobs in the town, prompting Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart to launch a petition.

EY managing director Ben Gilligan said the site would be kept on and used as a parking area with cleaning and welfare facilities for drivers and staff.

He said: “We propose demolishing the depot and offices and turning the site into a compound so that we can continue to operate services from Withernsea, but with all maintenance activities to be moved to Hull. This will retain employment locally for all Withernsea-based drivers.”

Mr Stuart said: “1,251 people signed my petition to keep these jobs in the town following the tragic fire on Bannister Street. Thanks to the efforts of all those people I am assured by East Yorkshire Buses that those jobs will be saved.”
