The Holderness Gazette – established in Withernsea, East Yorkshire in 1910 – is an independent, community-focused newspaper, owned and run by people who live here.
We are part of the area we report on, not visitors to it, and that matters. We understand local life because we share it – the good, the difficult and the everyday – and we care deeply about the people, places and issues that shape Holderness.
We are a small business ourselves, which means we understand other small businesses. We know how much hard work, risk and commitment goes into keeping something going week after week, and that informs how we work with advertisers, community groups and individuals.
Trust is central to what we do. We do not invade privacy, we report responsibly and fairly, and we aim to be a publication our readers can rely on.
The editor, Sam Hawcroft, has more than 25 years’ experience in local and national journalism, working across print and digital titles. That experience underpins the Gazette’s approach to clear, accurate reporting and strong community storytelling.
Sales director Zoë Broom has a similar length of experience in sales and commercial roles within the newspaper industry. She has lived in Holderness all her life, knows the area and its people well, and works closely with local businesses to help them reach their audience in a way that feels honest and effective.
The Holderness Gazette is published weekly and costs 85p. Although the paper comes out on a Thursday, our editions remain on the shelves all week, making them accessible to readers whenever they pick one up. We are distributed widely across the area, with a full list of stockists available.
Alongside the print edition, we have an active online presence and social media channels, allowing us to share news, events and updates throughout the week. Copy deadlines for the next edition are noon on Tuesday.
We may be small, but we work very hard to cover as many angles as possible. We are supported by a network of contributors and freelancers who help us reflect the breadth of life across Holderness, from community events and local sport to business, arts and public issues. We value contributions from the community and welcome story ideas, information and involvement from our readers.
At its heart, the Holderness Gazette exists to serve its community. We live here, we work here and we report with care, commitment and respect for the people who make this area what it is.

In this age of internet propaganda and disinformation, local news matters more than ever – but across the country, local news outlets are disappearing at an alarming rate in the face of rising costs and falling revenues.
Once they are gone, they are gone – and local people are then left at the mercy of social media groups full or gossip and hearsay, or faceless syndicated news outlets that do not care about the people they serve.
We would love it if you could support us by buying a paper (if you’re local to Holderness), subscribing online, or giving us a tip via the Ko-fi platform below. Thank you so much 💚
