Man fined after business waste found dumped in rural road

A Hull man has been fined after waste linked to his business was found dumped on a roadside in rural Holderness.

General waste and cardboard boxes belonging to Olijan Haxhia, of Ferensway, were discovered on a grass verge in Lambwath Lane, New Ellerby, in autumn 2023.

Haxhia pleaded guilty to failing in his duty of care to ensure his business waste was disposed of correctly when he appeared at Beverley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, March 4.

He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £811.70 in costs and a £48 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £959.70.

The court heard that streetscene enforcement officers from East Riding Council found bin bags and cardboard boxes on the grass verge in Lambwath Lane on October 11, 2023.

Investigations established the business waste belonged to Haxhia, who said he had given the rubbish to someone else to dispose of.

Residents and businesses are responsible for ensuring their waste is disposed of properly and legally.

Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding Council, said: “People should never dump waste, whether it’s from a household or a business. There are proper and legal ways of disposing of it.

“We will always take action where we can against anyone fly-tipping rubbish.”

Anyone caught fly-tipping in the East Riding could be issued with a fixed penalty notice of up to £1,000, or the case could be taken to court where offenders face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.

In addition, any vehicles used in connection with the fly-tipping of waste can be seized and destroyed.
