Seven friends from Burstwick have proved that teamwork, determination and community spirit can make a real difference.
This summer, Maddie, Bethany, Daisy, Ivy, Svea, Elsie and Tahlia – calling themselves the Burstwick Besties – have been taking part in the Humberside Police Lifestyle project, setting themselves a challenge to raise money for a good cause while providing entertainment for local children.
The girls chose to support local charity Go Kids Go, after the organisation visited their school in June to deliver a disability awareness workshop. The session gave pupils an insight into the daily challenges faced by young wheelchair users. Since 1990, Go Kids Go has provided vital wheelchair skills training, helping children and young people build independence and confidence in their everyday lives.
Keen to make a difference, the girls began planning before the school holidays even started. Their first idea was to host a movie night for local children, offering some summer holiday fun while raising funds for their chosen charity. This soon developed to include movie snacks, refreshments, decorations, bean bags, a projector, a teddy tombola, handmade bracelets to sell, and a raffle.
What began as a “small raffle” quickly grew, thanks to the support of the community. Maddie’s mother took three of the girls – Maddie, Bethany and Ivy – around the villages to explain their plans, and the response from local people and businesses was hugely encouraging. Donations came in thick and fast, with more than 30 prizes eventually on offer. Ticket sales for both the raffle and the movie night exceeded all expectations.
The movie night was held on Monday, August 18, at Burstwick Village Hall. Around 50 children attended to enjoy the film and activities, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Thanks to the success of the evening – and the generosity of the community – the girls raised £1,343.67 for Go Kids Go.
Elsie from the Burstwick Besties said: “Lots of people came and had a great time – I’m really glad we’ve done this.” Ivy added that she had really enjoyed organising the event with her friends and was delighted that it went so well and raised so much for their chosen charity.
Gemma, Daisy’s mother, said: “We are all so proud of the hard work the girls have put into making this event a success within the community to raise money for their chosen charity Go Kids Go. Thank you to everyone that supported them.”
Gill, who attended with her granddaughter, also praised the event: “Well done to all in the Burstwick Besties – a lot of hard work by everyone involved, especially the girls. A great night was had by all, and a lot of money has been raised for a great cause. It was wonderful to see the community coming together – let’s have more of the same.”
The Burstwick Besties are now looking forward to presenting their donation to the Beverley-based charity. Their efforts not only raised a significant sum but also brought the community together and highlighted the positive impact young people can make when they take on a challenge.
