Jeweller launches watch competition for vandal-hit nursery

Oct 22, 2026

by John Prince

The clock is ticking for customers at a jeweller’s shop in Hornsea, which has launched a competition to raise money to help support a nursery that was vandalised earlier this year.

An outdoor play area and a shed were damaged at Hornsea Nursery School back in August. Tools were also stolen.

The nursery said that they have been looking to raise funds to repair their Forest School area and replace stolen equipment for the children.

Now, Joe Harvatt from Robert Harvatt and Son jewellers on Market Place has launched a competition to guess the number of watches in a dome jar displayed in the shop window.

The person who guesses the amount correctly, or closest to it, will win an 18k gold diamond ring worth an estimated £850.

It’s one of many the fundraisers the family-run shop does throughout the year, including their always-popular treasure hunts.

Joe’s children all went to Hornsea Nursery School and he says he just wants to help and give something back to the community.

He said: “You’ve got to count the watches and come and have a guess. We are running the competition until the end of November and you get a chance to win a diamond ring.

“It’s £1 to enter, and all the proceeds go to the nursery.

“It got vandalised and some people went in there and made a bit of a mess, so we thought we’d raise some money for them and replace some stuff.

“We try and do something once every couple of months – something different – and support something local and give back a little bit, and this was next on the list.”
