Jessica’s visit proves a highlight for WI

Burstwick WI enjoyed a trip to Sewerby Hall and Gardens in place of their August meeting, with members making the most of the day out.

The September meeting took on a different format and was presided over by Suzanne Worral.

A highlight was the visit of Holderness Academy student Jessica Emerson, who was invited to accept a £100 donation from members to help towards her costs for a Peru expedition with Camps International.

Jessica had visited the WI in April to give details of the adventure planned for next year. She described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, with the chance to help in Peruvian schools, experience cultural exchange, and, towards the end of her trip, take part in a trek to Machu Picchu involving river crossings and mountain climbing.

She has already organised several fundraising events herself. Members wished her every success, describing her as a very determined young woman.

The guest speaker for the evening was fire brigade officer Angela Daley, who gave a helpful and engaging talk on safety in the home. She covered many aspects of how to make homes safer and answered a wide range of questions from members.

Business matters continued, with five members set to attend the Federation Autumn Council Meeting at Driffield Showground on October 23.

Several Burstwick WI ladies also joined Hedon WI on a two-day trip to the Scottish Borders, which included a visit to Thirlestane Castle at Lauder, an overnight stay at Peebles Hydro Hotel and time in Durham on the way home. Thanks were given to Irene McIntyre for organising another enjoyable trip.

The meeting ended with refreshments and conversation, enjoyed by all.

As always, visitors are welcome at any Burstwick WI meeting, held on the first Tuesday of each month at Burstwick Village Hall, starting at 7pm.
