First lifeboat callout of the year is false alarm

Feb 23, 2023

Hornsea’s independent lifeboat had its first callout last Friday afternoon to investigate a report of people cut off by the tide south of Mappleton.

Within minutes of receiving the call, the lifeboat Spirit of Hornsea was swiftly launched by launchmaster Adam Collins with coxswain Tom Mitchell and crew Jake Blackburn-Roberts and Rob Carthew on board.

They were soon on the scene to find that the “stranded persons” were in fact three fishermen who were in no danger as they had easy access to the cliff top. The callout was put down to a false alarm with good intent.

Coxswain Tom Mitchell said: “Fortunately on this occasion the people were in no danger, but we do get a number of callouts for people who have been stranded by the tide and would have probably perished but for our intervention.

“Walkers especially on Hornsea south beach should check the times of the tide – this can be done at Hornsea Boat Launch – and be aware that south of Hornsea the tide can hit the base of the cliffs some two and a half hours before high tide.”

Hornsea Inshore Rescue is a totally independent organisation supported solely by donations and grants, and is not part of the RNLI. It also raises funds by running courses on water safety, RYA courses for certificates in offshore powerboating, jet-ski handling, VHF radio certification and the RYA one-day first aid course.

Visitors and volunteers are always welcome whether they would like to serve as crew (comprehensive training is given), fundraisers or general helpers. Phone Sue on 07796 257989 or Ian on 01964 534302.
