A Hedon-based childminder has been shortlisted for a national award.
Cheeky Chimps Childminding founder Adele Harrison established her business in 2016, having gained seven years’ nursery experience and earning a Level 6 degree in Early Childhood, as well as completing an Early Years Professional Development Programme.
Now, after nine years of working with families in Hedon and beyond, Adele has been shortlisted for the National Childminder of the Year Award 2025, hosted by Nursery World, with the final taking place in September.
Adele said: “Being shortlisted for a Nursery World award is an incredible honour and a truly surreal experience. It’s overwhelming that my little setting has been picked as one of the top four in the country. What started as a small, home-based childminding business driven by passion and love for early years has now been recognised on a national level – and that means so much to me. Everyone who knows me knows I pretty much live and breathe my work and, for me, it is so much more than just a job.
“This recognition is a celebration of everything I believe in – child-led learning, emotional development, creativity, and supporting each child as a unique individual. It’s a reflection not just of my work, but of the amazing children and families who are part of this journey. I’m so proud, and deeply grateful. Being shortlisted inspires me to keep growing, learning, and giving my best to the children in my care – because they truly deserve it.”
Since 2016, Adele has continued to grow her business, gaining multiple children’s development programmes and accreditations. She has created a setting which is Hygge accredited and has signed up to be part of the Forest Childcare Association.
She added: “I strongly believe in learning through play and exploration. The children enjoy a rich variety of activities including baking, mindfulness, yoga, sensory play and outdoor adventures. My approach is very much child-led, with each child encouraged to follow their interests and express their individuality.
“We complete local outings to the orchard and nature spots regularly, and participate in litter-picking trips to help teach the children about community and caring for the world around them. We have achieved bronze and silver Green Tree School Awards from the Woodland Trust and are working towards gold level, as well as becoming a plastic-free accredited setting by reducing single-use plastic and learning about caring for the earth and wildlife through our litter-picking outings, which the children are really passionate about.
“My goal is to nurture each child’s confidence, independence and emotional resilience, while developing empathy, kindness, compassion, and lasting friendships. I support every child to achieve their goals, hopes and dreams. For us, learning is not just about school readiness – it’s about being ready for life.”
She also says that the families of children in her care have praised her commitment to providing nurturing environments for children. One parent said: “Adele has become so much more than a childminder to us – she’s truly like family. The love, care and stability she brings into our child’s life is something we’ll always be grateful for.”
Another said: “Adele is an exceptional childminder. Her dedication, kindness and professionalism have made a profound difference to our lives.”
