Following the success of last weekend’s Time and Tide performance by the May Geslins and Hull Community Theatre, Withernsea Methodist Church is set to host a second maritime-themed event this weekend.
Featuring performances from Holderness-based singers and musicians, a Maritime Folk Evening will take place this Saturday, August 10, in aid of the Fishermen’s Mission – a national charity that works to support fishermen and their families.
The free event will feature performances by Kevin Young, Morning Dew and the Elevation Youth Music Group. They will be joined by singer Rebecca Theobald – a mission port officer with the Fishermen’s Mission who, under her stage name Rebecca Ivy, will be leading a singalong of the Mission’s official hymn Eternal Father.
She said: “It’s an evening celebrating local talent, folk music and the maritime history of Hull and Yorkshire coast.
“Alongside the performances, there will be information and a short talk on the history, and the present-day activities, of the Mission.”
Explaining the wider work of the charity, Rebecca added: “We’re funded solely by donations, and 88p of each pound donated goes directly to supporting a fisherman or their family. We can support seafaring families with a range of concerns including mental health support, relationship issues, financial support and financial grants. We can also advocate on behalf of a client.
“Money raised from Saturday’s event will directly fund the Hull and Yorkshire Coast team. We have a lot of retired fishermen on our patch and a lot of the work that we do goes towards providing financial grants for white goods, food, and energy top-ups.
“We pride ourselves on being a service that can still offer face- to-face pastoral support, most of the time within the client’s own home.”
The Maritime Folk Evening takes place at Withernsea Methodist Church, Hull Road, this Saturday, August 10, between 7pm and 8.30pm. Doors open at 6.30pm. Although the event is free to attend, donations are welcome.
