The deadline for motorists to pay their Humber Bridge toll will change when the new tolling system launches next week.
Humber Bridge users will now have until midnight the day after crossing to pay their toll.
If they miss the midnight deadline, they will trigger an unpaid toll notification and receive a £25 admin fee.
This means if motorists cross the Humber Bridge on a Monday, they have until midnight on Tuesday to pay the toll, or the extra charge will be automatically added to the amount owed.
This applies seven days a week, including all bank holidays.
On Friday, January 30, the toll booths closed for the final time. Customer data from existing HumberTag accounts is being migrated over the “go live” weekend, and the new system will then become fully operational from Monday, February 2.
Drivers crossing the bridge this weekend who do not have an account will be able to pay their toll once the new system is live on Monday. They have until midnight on Tuesday, February 3, to pay, otherwise they will incur the £25 fee.
Bridge bosses say the new tolling system, called Humber Bridge Toll, introduces a range of new and improved ways to pay, including a more user-friendly website, a new payment app, phone payments by calling customer services, and the opportunity to pay by debit or credit card, or cash, at any PayPoint location.
Unlike the HumberTag system it replaces, Humber Bridge users will be able to make instant payments after crossing the Humber Bridge rather than waiting for their crossing to be processed. They can also pay for crossings in advance via the website.
Andrew Arundel, CEO of the Humber Bridge, urged motorists to learn more about the new payment window before the launch of the new system so they avoid being hit with a £25 administration charge.
The fee is going up from its current level of £15 to £25 – the first increase in 11 years – when Humber Bridge Toll launches, because of the increased cost of recovering unpaid tolls.
Mr Arundel said: “Humber Bridge Toll introduces new and flexible ways to pay, such as the app which will be available when the new system goes live and enables users to pay in advance or instantly rather than wait for their crossing to appear on the website.
“As part of this process, the payment window is changing. All toll payments must be made by midnight the day after the crossing took place, otherwise a £25 administration charge will be added to the toll fee owed.
“The change brings the Humber Bridge into line with other crossings in the UK, including Dartford and the Tyne Tunnel, and it is vital people understand this change. Otherwise, they could be hit with avoidable extra charges.
“Therefore, I urge people to learn about the new payment window before the launch of the system.”
