Crew welcome home pair after ‘epic adventure’

Aug 24, 2023

Hornsea Inshore Rescue crew have welcomed home two of their members after their “epic” four-day fundraising cycle trek.

Shona Richards and Jenny Hannon, along with friend Charlie O’Brien, cycled along the Transpennine Trail from Southport to Hornsea.

Jenny described the trek as “an epic adventure”.

She added: “We set off at 9.30am from Southport beach and stopped overnight at Sale. Next day we cycled over the Pennines to spend the night at Dunford Bridge and from there we travelled to Temple Hirst near Selby, where we camped overnight at the Sloop Inn and were made very welcome.

“From here we started the final leg to Hornsea, arriving at 5.15pm to a very warm welcome from the crew and supporters.

“The hardest part of the trek was going over the Pennines using the Hikers’ Trail to Dunford Bridge – I must admit to getting off and pushing the bike at one stage!

“Overall it was a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable trip and we met some very interesting people along the way including one lady hiker aged 94, whose advice for hikers of a certain age was, ‘First of all, keep moving.’”

Charlie, who is in the same boxing group as Shona – Ultra White Collar Boxing, raising money for Cancer Research – said: “We had to work really hard as a team but we had some good laughs along the way, especially when I was convinced I was being chased by a bull.”

So far the team has raised more than £2,000 for Hornsea Inshore Rescue, which is in the process of updating its facilities to match the very best.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue is a totally independent local rescue organisation supported solely by donations and grants. It also raises funds by running courses on water safety, RYA courses for certificates in off shore power boating, jetski handling, VHF radio certification and the RYA one-day first aid course.
