Harmony will come to Hedon this month as two singing groups take to the stage at St Augustine’s Church to help raise funds for its repair and restoration.
Male chorus Humber Harmony and mixed group One Hull of a Chorus will perform at the church on Saturday, October 10, from 7pm.
The concert is the latest in a series organised by Rev Sue Pulko and St Augustine’s, following performances by the May Geslins, Beverley Male Voice Choir, Kevin Young’s Beggars Opera, the Village Singers and East Yorkshire Brass Band.
Humber Harmony has been together for nine years and won its class at Interculture 2023 in Hull, where it also received a special award for entertainment. At the British Association of Barbershop Singers convention in 2024, the group won the Most Entertaining Chorus award.
One Hull of a Chorus also enjoyed success at the 2024 event, winning the Best Small Chorus award.
The programme will feature traditional songs alongside film and show numbers and more contemporary music, all performed in four-part a cappella harmony.
Entry is £8, with all proceeds going towards St Augustine’s Church Repair and Restoration Fund.
Construction of the present church began around 1190 and the building was largely completed in its current form by 1450. Known as the King of Holderness, the Grade I-listed church is regarded as one of the country’s most significant parish churches.
Funds are being raised to pay for surveys and plans needed as part of efforts to secure a multimillion-pound grant towards major restoration work, including measures to tackle damp and deterioration and preserve the historic building for future generations.
The harmony concert will be among several events at St Augustine’s during October, with a beer festival and comedy evening also planned.
