A popular couple who met as 18-year-olds celebrated 50 years of marriage last Saturday.
John and Sue Chadwick were married on August 3, 1974, at the Hull Road Methodist Church in Withernsea, followed by a reception at the Queen’s Hotel.
They met at a youth club disco held at Withernsea High School, but coincidentally they had been christened together at the same ceremony 18 years earlier at St Matthew’s Church in the town.
John was born in Withernsea but travelled around not only in this country but also abroad as his father was serving with the RAF, but settled back in his home town after his parents left the services.
Sue was also born and raised in the town and the couple were married shortly after their 21st birthdays.
John spent his working life in the motor trade while Sue was a civil servant, but went on to become a teacher’s aide at all of the town’s three schools.
In 2000 they moved to Halsham after buying the Tower Garage which they ran for 21 years until retirement.
They are now settled back in Withernsea where they still lead busy lives.
The couple have three children, Paul, Matthew and Laura, and six grandchildren. To mark their 50 golden years, they held a party at the Northfield on Saturday for their family and friends.
