Cast-iron bollards back on the cards after new council quote

Oct 24, 2026

by John Prince

Hornsea Town Council has revised its decision over new bollards in a town park, and has now opted for five traditional cast-iron ones at Elim Gardens after a new quote brought the cost down by more than £2,500.

Councillors had previously voted in September to install cheaper galvanised bollards, quoted at £6,255, after the cost of cast-iron ones was originally put at £10,215.

However, a new manufacturer’s quote of £7,700 has reduced the estimated cost of the cast-iron option by £2,515, prompting the council to take a U-turn on its earlier decision.

Although the revised price is still £1,445 higher than the galvanised bollards, councillors have voted to go ahead with cast-iron, which will preserve the traditional aesthetic appearance of the gardens and improve safety.

The decision means the replacement bollards will be more in keeping with the heritage and character of Elim Gardens, while costing considerably less to fit and replace than originally anticipated.

The council’s change of direction represents a compromise between keeping costs down and maintaining the appearance of the park.
