Yorkshire Water has apologised to customers across South Holderness after two burst mains left homes with low or no water during the hot weather.
The company says customers in Patrington, Preston, Withernsea, Bilton and surrounding villages have been affected by the bursts, combined with higher-than-usual demand.
A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “We appreciate that this is extremely frustrating and would like to apologise for the inconvenience this incident will have caused, particularly given the hot weather, and would like to thank our customers for their continued patience.”
Operational teams remain on site in Preston, where a major burst beneath Main Street has led to a large excavation close to All Saints’ Church. The road is closed to through traffic, with a signed diversion in place while repairs continue.
Yorkshire Water said the repair and return to normal supply was now “imminent”, although some customers could continue to experience low pressure or discoloured water while the network returns to normal.
Bottled water deliveries are under way for customers on the company’s priority services register, with pallets also delivered to Sandhill Nursery in Preston and Highfield Caravan Park.
Water is also being delivered to a number of care homes across the affected area.
Yorkshire Water initially said it was setting up a bottled water station at the overflow car park at Withernsea Leisure Centre, but later said this was likely to be stood down as supplies were returning.
Community efforts have also been under way. Dunedin House in Patrington travelled into Hull to collect bottled water for people in the village, with supplies being handed out free of charge at four bottles per person.
Shops across the affected area have also been running low on bottled still water as residents seek alternative supplies.
Cllr Jon Dimberline also urged residents who had not already done so to consider signing up to Yorkshire Water’s priority services register.
Yorkshire Water said that once supply and pressure returned to normal there may still be some isolated areas of low pressure or discoloured water.
Anyone experiencing discolouration is advised to run the tap for a couple of minutes, after which the water should return to normal.
