AFC Preston Ladies toast league victory

On May 5, the ladies played their final match of the season against Malet Lambert away.

After a lacklustre performance on Sunday, the team started strongly, with Aimee scoring the first goal of the game in the opening seconds, slotting the ball past the keeper from the edge of the box.

Abby then scored a well-placed finish across the keeper, quickly followed by a free kick from Aimee that found the back of the net. Abby scored another good goal to make it 4-0 at half time.

In the second half, Malet came out much stronger and the team struggled to put anything together, spending most of the time on the defence. With about 15 minutes to go, Aimee lobbed the keeper to complete her hat-trick and Paige made the most of a not-so-great ball through to score the team’s sixth goal.

The final score was 6-0, though it wasn’t the team’s greatest game of the season because of injuries and the need for a good rest. Aimee scored three goals, Abby scored two and Paige scored one.

Aimee received the golden boot for the season, with Paige sitting comfortably in second. It has been a successful season for the team, with the first-ever league and cup double achieved. The team has reintroduced some players back to football after an eight-year break, and younger players have slotted in well to bring some youth to the ageing squad. Despite work and university commitments, the team would like to thank those who made massive efforts to come home for games when needed.

The team has decided to stay in the local league, despite often being asked if they would consider promotion. The current squad is unable to commit to the challenges that come with promotion due to job, family, and other commitments.

Congratulations to the ladies on a great season! A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the team, as well as those who continue to support the girls on the sideline every week. Special thanks to Trev and Shawn, and a huge thank you to Sue, who works behind the scenes to support the team.

Now it’s time for a well-earned break!
