A fun way to brush up your French

by Michelle Horst

Hornsea residents and business owners are being encouraged to develop their French language skills as the popular French Coffee Club returns for a new season at Hornsea Methodist Church.

The relaxed group offers an affordable and practical way to learn usable French. Organisers Hornsea Town Twinning say the sessions are not like school but designed to be fun and suitable for everyone.

The monthly group is framed around bringing the language to life by using important holiday vocabulary and not focused on writing. Topics will include greetings, making travel plans, directions, accommodation, eating out and shopping.

French tutor Helen Gallagher said: “It was really popular last year. It was lots of fun. People are looking forward to its return.”

The sessions are supported by Speech Bubble Languages, which offers the same fun, relaxed mindset to learning something new. Helen added: “It’s not a memory test for anyone.”

The benefits from attending the club include improving job opportunities, building confidence, and making new friends. Charities, including the Alzheimer’s Society, have revealed that recent studies emphasise the benefits of practising new languages, advising that the hobby defends against dementia. French Coffee Club regulars say it helps them broaden their horizons and make friends while having fun.

The club is part of Hornsea Town Twinning Association, which works to promote the town at home and abroad. Some members have represented Hornsea through trips to Bouaye in France. Alternatively, ambassadors for Hornsea can host visitors and business guests.

With VisitBritain recording the average tourist spend in Yorkshire at £12.9 million in 2023-24, organisers say there are many opportunities for businesses in the town.

By working in partnership with the French Coffee Club and the Hornsea Town Twinning Association, they can break down barriers and cost-effectively promote their services across the Channel.

The coffee club starts on Tuesday, November 12, continuing on the second Tuesday of each month from 10.30am to noon. Sessions are £4 or six sessions for £20, covering hall hire costs.
