St Nicholas Church, Withernsea, is to host an event giving people the rare chance to purchase vintage Holderness postcards dating back to the 1900s.
On Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29, collector Peter McCurdy will showcase his collection of postcards dating back to the early 1900s and host a silent auction, giving visitors the chance to purchase them.
Peter said his collection began around 50 years ago and has grown into a substantial archive of photographs from across the South and Mid-Holderness region.
However, he is now looking to sell the collection to successful bidders at the end of the month with the help of the Withernsea Riff-Raff project.
He described the archive as covering a “big triangle of land” stretching from Paull to Hedon, north to Tunstall, then down to the tip of Spurn Point.
After spending between 40 and 50 years searching the region for postcards, Peter said the collection included around 150 cards from Easington alone.
Peter said: “I’ve collected from Paull right up to Bilton, right down to Spurn Point, if you can imagine that big triangle of land.
“I would either sell them village by village or I would sell the whole collection as one.”
Darrin Stevens, who founded Withernsea Riff-Raff, said: “It’s a real honour to help Peter share a lifetime of collecting postcards that celebrate the 28 villages and towns of Holderness.
“His collection holds rare glimpses into our shared past, images of our homes and streets reaching back to the early 1900s, reminding us how deeply our history lives in the places we walk every day.”
The event on March 28-29, between 10am and 3pm, will also feature an exhibition by Withernsea Riff-Raff.
