Man held over ‘meat cleaver’ attack

A 66-year-old man has been arrested after an attack at a takeaway in Withernsea left another man in hospital with head injuries.

Emergency services were called to Queen Street yesterday afternoon (Sunday, September 21) following reports of a serious assault at around 3.20pm.

It was reported that a 52-year-old man had sustained a large cut to his head after being struck with what is believed to be a meat cleaver.

Detective Inspector Lloyd Sharkett said: “Following the report, I can confirm a 66-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of wounding with intent and he remains in police custody while inquiries are ongoing.

“A 52-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

“I understand an incident of this nature will be concerning for the local community. However, I want to offer my reassurance that we take reports of this nature very seriously and we believe this to be an isolated incident.”
