Although he only lived in the village of Welwick for a short time, Shaun Hutchins was a popular and much-respected resident, and made a large contribution to improve the community spirit.
He died in 2024, aged 62, but fellow members of the Welwick Short Mat Bowls Club, of which he was a keen member, decided to remember him by naming the annual pairs knockout competition after him.
A total of 24 players, along with guests, recently met at Welwick Village Hall for the competition and after a keenly fought final the winning pair were Janet Wheelwright and Gill Smith who narrowly defeated Alan Collins and Christine Morris.
After the matches and presentation those present were able to enjoy an afternoon tea.
The event raised £161 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Short mat sessions are held each Wednesday afternoon at the hall, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, and evenings from 7pm to 9pm. Beginners are always very welcome.
A special seat in memory of Shaun is located in Main Street near the war memorial.
