Event to celebrate Withernsea’s famous women

Oct 8, 2026

Some of the remarkable women with connections to Withernsea will be celebrated at a special event this weekend.

Local historians Darrin Stevens and Godfrey Holmes have joined forces for Violet Day at St Nicholas Church on Saturday, October 10, highlighting women who have played a part in the town’s history.

Among those featured will be actress Kay Kendall, celebrated dance teacher Irene Lawson and Florence Cavell, sister of First World War nurse Edith Cavell.

Four presentations will take place during the day, at 11am, noon, 1pm and 2pm, looking at the stories of some of the women associated with Withernsea.

Visitors will also be welcome to drop into the church at any time between 10am and 4pm to meet Darrin and Godfrey, find out more about the women featured and share their own memories and knowledge of local history.

The event will also provide an opportunity to look around the restored St Nicholas Church.

Admission is free and tea and coffee will be available.

Violet Day takes place at St Nicholas Church, Withernsea, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, October 10.
