Brand new lighting bollards are to be installed at Elim Gardens in Hornsea after town councillors chose a galvanised steel design over a more decorative cast-iron option.

Councillors were shown examples of two possible designs, with five new bollards required.

The cast-iron version was described as looking like a ‘lighthouse’, while the galvanised steel alternative was compared with ‘a magician’s wand’.

There was some support for the cast-iron design because it would match existing lighting in Elim Gardens, but councillors decided the more affordable galvanised option would be suitable for the location.

Members heard that the cast-iron bollards would cost more than £1,400 each, compared with just over £650 each for the galvanised steel version.

Installation of the five bollards will cost £2,000, with a further £1,000 to connect them, bringing the total to £10,215 plus VAT for cast iron and £6,255 plus VAT for galvanised steel.

Another quotation obtained had come in at more than £13,000.

Councillors also considered durability, with the gardens’ proximity to the seafront and exposure to salt air raised during the discussion.

The galvanised steel option was approved.
