A group of volunteers who aim to improve the visual appeal, environment and community wellbeing in Hornsea has won a string of awards at the town’s annual horticultural show.
The show, which is now in its eighth year, was held at St Nicholas Church and opened its doors to displays of fruit, vegetables, preserves, baking and crafts.
Supported by the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Yorkshire and officially opened by Hornsea mayor Cllr Stephen Prescott, the show saw the Hornsea Urban Gardeners (HUG) winning 11 awards for produce from their allotment on Hull Road.
The awards – 5 first place and 6 second place – included best in show for their sunflower and an aubergine, and best in class for their onions.
Sharon Jackson from HUG said: “The allotment is about much more than growing fruit, flowers and vegetables.
“It is about friendships formed over shared tasks, encouragement during difficult days, lending a hand when someone needs it and the satisfaction of watching a tiny seed become something to be proud of.
“The community spirit filled St Nicholas Church, showcasing the incredible talent, creativity and hard work of local people.
“Members of our allotment team also entered the craft section, joining a wonderful collection of imaginative exhibits.”
HUG founder June Greensmith said: “Eight years of entering the Hornsea horticultural show and I’ve honestly lost count of all the medals, certificates and trophies HUG volunteers have won along the way.
“Very, very well done to you all. This year has been particularly difficult on the allotment with challenging growing conditions and, of course, no mains water supply, which makes this achievement even more special.
“From those early entries eight years ago to winning best in show this year, what a journey it has been.
“As founder and chair it has been an absolute privilege for me to watch the allotment team grow in confidence, knowledge and friendship over the years.
“Seeing you take this year’s show on yourselves and achieve such a fantastic result under difficult circumstances makes me incredibly proud.
“Well done, Allotment Team HUG. You thoroughly deserve it. Thank you to the Rotary Club for presenting the trophy and supporting the show.”
