Withernsea’s long-awaited microbusiness kiosks and beach huts have now been installed, marking a visible step forward for the seafront schemes after earlier delays.
The units were delivered on a lorry early on Tuesday, May 12, and craned into their respective sites shortly afterwards.
The kiosks in Valley Gardens are all bright blue, with stormproof outer doors, double-glazed doors behind them and electricity supply already fitted.
Meanwhile, the beach huts nearby on the prom are bright blue, yellow and red, and have also been put in place.
A spokeswoman for Withernsea Town Council said that, now the kiosks and huts were in situ, “the last bits will then be done including the reinstatement of the gardens.
“Over the next couple of weeks there will be a short period of commissioning work to be done.
“There will not be any impact on any summer events.”
The project had previously been delayed by issues including the release of funds, but councillors had said they remained confident the scheme would be ready in time for the summer season.
At an earlier town council meeting, members also stressed that both the kiosks and beach huts were being funded through external money rather than from local council tax or the town precept.
Deputy mayor Cllr Kristina Richardson said the developments had been made possible through UK Shared Prosperity Fund money devolved via East Riding Council following a successful funding bid.
She said the operational and management costs would be covered through the income generated once the kiosks and beach huts were in use.
Among those watching Tuesday’s delivery was Darrin Stevens, whose home overlooks the promenade.
He said the flattening of the grassy mound had, for the first time in years, allowed one of his elderly neighbours to see the sea from his house again.
Mr Stevens also dismissed some of the cynicism he said he had encountered while photographing the kiosks being delivered.
He said: “Why don’t these people give things a chance? People are so quick to knock anything new.”
