Plans for nine new homes in Hollym rejected

by Andrew Spence

Plans for nine new homes in Hollym have been rejected by East Riding Council.

Outline plans had been submitted for a residential development off Withernsea Road, north of Smook Hills Road.

The land is currently “untidy and overgrown with vegetation in places”, according to the plans.

All nine properties would have been single-storey homes. Plans say they would likely have each had three or four bedrooms.

As plans explain, there is existing vehicle access to the site, with a drop kerb in place. Each of the properties would have had off-street parking and private rear gardens.

East Riding Council’s decision notice, which explains the reason for refusal, says “the proposed development is located in the countryside on a site which is not allocated for any form of development”.

The document argued that the homes “would further encroach into the countryside within a green space area which provides separation between the settlements of Hollym and Withernsea”.

The document goes on to say the proposals would be “harmful” to the “intrinsic character” of the area.

Prior to the publication of the decision notice, a council report into the application recommended refusal. It argued the proposals did “not represent effective use of land through the low density of development”.

Concerns were also raised about flooding. The report says two of the plots lie “within an area at future risk of flooding from rivers as a result of climate change”.
