Hedon and District Men in Sheds is taking its first steps towards creating a dedicated community hub aimed at reducing social isolation and improving wellbeing in the town and surrounding villages.
Formed in late 2025, the group has been set up to provide a welcoming and inclusive space where adults can come together to socialise, share skills and take part in meaningful activities.
With 35 prospective members already expressing interest, the organisation is already showing there is clear demand for a safe, supportive environment where people can build friendships, develop confidence and enjoy a sense of purpose.
The group is currently exploring options for a permanent base, including the possible transformation of the former Hedon railway station into a community facility. The long-term vision is to create a hub offering hands-on workshop projects, recreational sessions and peer support.
Part of the wider Men’s Sheds movement, the model offers an accessible, low-pressure way for people – particularly retirees, widowers and those living alone – to reconnect socially and improve their mental wellbeing.
The UK Men’s Sheds Association, established in 2008, now supports more than 1,100 Sheds nationwide, helping around 30,000 to 33,000 people each week through practical activities, social connection and wellbeing support.
A £500 grant from Gleeson Homes will help cover essential start-up costs as Hedon & District Men in Sheds works towards securing its first physical space and developing a programme of community-led activities.
Tom Sporney, main contact and trustee for Hedon and District Men in Sheds, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Gleeson for supporting our mission at such a crucial stage, as we look to establish ourselves in our community.
“Our shed will be a place where people can come together, find companionship, and rediscover purpose. This donation brings us one step closer to creating a much-needed space that will benefit our community for years to come.”
Alison Mahoney, sales manager at Gleeson Homes, added: “Hedon and District Men in Sheds is doing important work to tackle social isolation and bring communities together.
“We’re proud to support an organisation that is creating meaningful connections and offering vital support to individuals who may otherwise feel alone. We look forward to seeing the positive impact their new space will have.”
