PICTURE GALLERY: Pink, pink and more pink for cancer charity

Dozens turned out at Hornsea Methodist Church for this year’s Wear It Pink day to support the Breast Cancer Now charity.

Organised by church member Hilary Himsworth, who herself is a breast cancer survivor, the day is held to raise awareness and funds for vital research and support services.

It also gives an opportunity for people to get together and share their own experiences of living with cancer, whether it be themselves or a friend or loved one.

Supporting this year’s event was Calebo Hairdressing on Newbegin who had commissioned a specially made pink balloon display to hang in their window. They also held a charity raffle to win a bag of goodies including cosmetics, hair products and, of course, pink gin.

Pink cakes, frocks, cuddly toys, tablecloths and pink prizes were the order of the day, with one lady dressed head-to-toe in pink with matching pink hair!

Hilary (pictured below) said the support on the day had been amazing, and they had also received a surprise donation out of the blue.

She said: “We’ve had an anonymous donation today of £200, which is just amazing. We have had so much support from the town and the church, and the media.

“Our local hairdresser Calebo has organised a raffle and she’s had a display up all week to support breast cancer awareness which is brilliant.

“Breast Cancer Now do a lot of research into how it can be treated and how it can be possibly prevented.

“They offer help if you have breast cancer. If you’ve had cancer and you want to phone the helpline they will give you information, and they do a lot of promotional work encouraging people to take charge of their own health and check themselves.

“That is so important for both men and women.

“Just today, I’ve heard of somebody today who’s newly diagnosed, and it’s happening every day all over the country. We are making progress though, and there are huge steps being made.

“Ten years ago, I might not have been here if it hadn’t have been for the research.

“Early detection is the key. I know it’s scary, but you should get it checked out as soon as possible. It’s one of the biggest things that you do to overcome it.”

Julie Goodlass from Calebo Hairdressing (above) said: “Everybody’s affected by cancer at some point. I’ve had family with breast cancer, and I’ve had quite a few of my customers suffer from it.

“I even had a scare once myself. Luckily, I was okay.

“Everyone has been very generous buying raffle tickets, making donations in prizes and promoting the balloons.

“The special window display was made for us by Vicky Sirs from Gifts as Balloons who is local.

“It’s so important to raise awareness, publicly as well as in person. We’ve all got to get together to support a worthwhile cause.”
