OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW: Retiring Withernsea Golf

ON SUNDAY, November 19, members of Withernsea Golf Club contested a Single Stableford event and the winner was Steve Read with 39 points.
Runner-up on the count back system was Martin Thurkettle, who also scored 39 points and third place went to Mark Thurkettle, who registered 38 points.
There were four winners in the Two’s Club; Martin Thurkettle, Dave Dean, Steve Read and Mike Hart.
On Tuesday, November 21, the Single Stableford event was postponed and the course was closed as parts of the course were waterlogged.
On Saturday, November 25, there was a Single Medal competition and the winner was Phil McKee, with a nett 71. Runner-up was Martin Thurkettle, who registered a 73 and no third place was recorded.
The Spin-2-Win winning number for Sunday, November 26 was (7) – Terry Kitching.
On Sunday, November 26 members contested a Better Ball Stableford event and the winners were Ian Thurkettle and Hughie Semple who registered 45 points, edging out runners-up Mark Thurkettle and Dave Dean (44) by a single point.
There were seven winners in the Two’s Club; Ian Thurkettle, Dave Dean, Steve Dale Jnr, Shane Foster, Keith Garton, Colin Somerville and Jez Smith.
On Tuesday, November 28 there was a Single Stableford event and the winner was Martin Thurkettle. No score, second or third place was supplied.
On Saturday, December 2 the scheduled Texas Scramble event had to be cancelled as the course was flooded.
The Spin-2-Win winning number for Sunday, December 3 was (34) – Tim Silversides and the lottery was won by Martin Thurkettle. The Supporters Club Draw was number 175 – Amy Dale. Other prizes – (80) Dave Kinnear, (159) Ian Thurkettle (62) Rob Griggs (67) Graham Riley (22) Rachel Playfoot and (153) Alan Dean.
The Captain’s ‘Drive-In’ took place on Sunday, December 3 and the Withernsea Golf Club captain for 2018 is Mr. Keith Garton.
Last weekend Withernsea Golf Club officials, previous captains, members, family and friends all met to watch Keith launch his ‘Drive-In’ and he did it in style, with current members falling in the mud and the ditch in trying to retrieve the balls he hit.
The retiring captain, Colin Somerville, presented Keith with his tie and wished him well for the coming season. Keith presented Colin with a past captain’s tie and thanked him for running a very successful year of golf at the club; he hoped to follow his example
