Withernsea edge coastal thriller

Hornsea RUFC        36

Withernsea RUFC  49

PRE-SEASON friendlies can often be slightly dull affairs with sides not quite being at the races, however, this match-up was highly entertaining from the start to the final whistle.
Both sides had spells which they dominated, Withernsea the opening twenty minutes, with Hornsea getting back into the game during the second part of the first half, which saw Withernsea hold a five tries to three lead at the interval.
The second half was a reverse of the first, this time Hornsea were on top to start with, but Withernsea finished the stronger of the two, and although both sides scored plenty of tries, two late well struck penalties saw Withernsea take the spoils.
As expected the game was pretty open on Hornsea’s large pitch, with missed tackles, tired legs and some wayward handling perhaps the norm for a pre-season game. Both sides should take positives from the match, Withernsea looked a strong, skilful and together side who will definitely go well in the East District Merit League 2 this season.
It was also good to see a relatively young Hornsea side run in some well worked tries, however, they will need to tighten things up if they are going to compete for the upper places in the East District Merit League 1.
Hornsea’s try scorers were; Martin Dosdale, Dan Faure, Matt Smallwood, Brandon Leggett, Liam Tudor Bateman and Tom Fraser.
So, all in all an enjoyable afternoon for all 60 or so spectators and playersalike, great to have the Holderness derby back!
Next up for Hornsea is their opening East District Merit League 1 fixture on Saturday September 9 when they entertain Hullensians, kick off 3pm. The club would like to thank local photographer Carl Wiles for some great action pictures.
